Process Engineer and Safety Specialist

Location: Addison, IL or Branchburg, NJ
Pay: $75k/yr – $95k/yr.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for supporting operations at both the Addison and Branchburg facilities. Responsibilities include leading the safety program and creating a safety-first culture; manufacturing process support in the areas of spray drying, dry blending, liquid compounding and packaging; drive operational efficiencies across both manufacturing sites; support the food safety programs; support both facilities with technical problem solving; assisting with capital projects. The position is also responsible for creating and supporting the development of manufacturing SOP’s, flow diagrams and work instructions. 

 Job Responsibilities: 

  • Promote and lead the company safety program by creating safety policies, creating and implementing safety training programs, conducting HAZOPs, Job safety analysis, and physical and chemical risk assessments. 
  • Investigate and document safety and operational incidents or near misses, identifying root causes and implementing / verifying corrective actions. 
  • Ensure process compliance with regulatory and company safety, food safety and environmental standards. (OSHA, GMP, HACCP) 
  • Lead troubleshooting and continuous improvement projects in spray drying, liquid compounding, dry blending and emulsions. 
  • Support scale up of new products and process changes in collaboration with R&D, regulatory, quality and production. 
  • Develop and maintain accurate process documentation, including SOPs. Process flow diagrams and work instructions. 
  • Lead the OPEX (Operational Excellence) program for manufacturing and support OPEX activities in other areas throughout the company. 
  • Identify and implement OEE improvements for spray drying, dry blending and liquid compounding processes. 
  • Support and lead small scale engineering / CAPEX projects related to capacity improvements, equipment upgrades or new technology implementation. 
  • Manage timeliness, budgets and contractor coordination in alignment with company goals and policies. 
  • Conduct research to develop new and improved manufacturing processes 
  • Evaluate equipment and processes to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations 
  • Estimate production costs for management 
  • Travel up to 25% to Branchburg, NJ and future sites as required (minimally once every two months or as needed) 

 Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, manufacturing or chemical engineering needed. 
  • 3 to 5 years of engineering experience in flavor, chemical or food manufacturing leading and implementing continuous improvement projects 
  • Strong safety leadership background is required. Must have proclivity for workplace safety. Responsible for maintaining and managing OSHA compliance in a manufacturing setting demonstrated by evaluating workplace and flavor hazards, assigning PPEs, conduct training to ensure information is retained and practiced, manage hearing conservation and Respirator Protection programs and identifying continuous improvements. Includes Hazcom and other standard ancillary programs. 
  • Member of FEMA is a plus 
  • Ability to investigate and conduct root cause analysis and make decisions on facts. 
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate well with all levels within the organization and keep them connected to changes and safety in the workplace. 
  • Hands on experience with spray drying a plus. 
  • Leam manufacturing certification a plus or ability to apply and implement concepts 
  • Ability to multi-task and meet competing deadlines 
  • Ability to manage and meet budgetary requirements. 
  • Self-starter, ability to perform duties of the position with limited supervision 
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; Spanish is a plus 
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving strengths 
  • Proficient in data analysis, process controls and troubleshooting. 
  • Good working knowledge of Excel, Word, Access with a comfort level of learning new systems 
  • Experience with Sage ERP system highly desired or experience with other similar ERP system needed. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 
  • Work environment – incumbent will spend a large percentage of time in an environment of known chemical/food allergens, strong aromas and dust. Must be able to wear all appropriate PPEs in labs and production floor.
